Tops
Hard Top
In general the hard top was in pretty good shape. All of the trim will be buffed out to look better then new and the fiberglass will need very little prep work to get it ready to shoot. The problem areas with this top are one, the glass has some scratches from an irresponsible person using an orbital sander and the locking hardware has some rust and pitting and will need new plating. Still a bargain when you consider this top will look and function as a brand new top for a fraction of the cost when complete. In the fourth picture you can see the date it was assembled at the factory, 4/19/68 by MS.
The headliner in Corvette Hard Tops is very expensive, over $350 to replace the 4 pieces. What I found with my headliner was that it was in very good shape, but had been dyed black. I cleaned everything up and prepped the surface with a vinyl dye adhesion promoter and then sprayed the parts. The finish result is amazing! The quart of dye only ran about $30 and did much more than just these parts (see interior page) and they look brand new now.
Here is the hard top at the body shop after the paint has been stripped , sanded, and primed. It will be sporting a fresh coat of LeMans blue before long!
Rag Top
As you can see, the 'rag' top was trash! It was difficult to touch the vinyl at all without it coming apart in my hand. The good news is that under all of that rotten vinyl and fabric was a frame in excellent condition. Other than media blasting, and painting the frame there will be very little work needed to restore it to new condition. I will install new tac strips all the way around and new stainless tension springs and cables. The new white top is already in and waiting on the finished car to get fitted as it needs to be done on the car for a perfect fit. Just like the hard top, the locking hardware has rust and pits and will need to be plated again, no worries.
The frame was media blasted and then powder coated gloss black. It has been re-assembled and the new felts and tack strips have been inserted. TIP: When putting in tack strips a little wax applied to the bows allows them to be pressed in easier. I used the curved back of plumbers pliers to roll it down once it was started.
Here is the rag top frame mounted and trial fitted on the car. Looks good. I can't wait to get this thing covered and start cruising! Putting the top on will be one of the very last things done.... Cause I don't need it to have fun or pass inspection!
